Any part of the foot can be infected by fungus (mycosis). On the sole of the foot it is generally dry, and between the toes it is often moist. Both conditions are called Tinea Pedis (Athlete's Foot), whereas fungal infection of the nails is Onychomycosis. All too often, dry, flakey skin on the foot is caused by fungal infection, and should therefore not be treated initially with moisturizing cream. Different fungal locations require different treatments, but all require specialised medications either applied directly to the skin or taken in tablet form. A visit to a Chiropodist / Podiatrist would confirm the diagnosis and then provide the best advice for treatment.
